Disgusting Food Museum

Food is more than nourishment; it’s culture, curiosity, and community. At the Disgusting Food Museum, 80 of the world’s most unusual dishes challenge our perception of what is edible. From stinky cheeses to the world’s saltiest candy. Come and challenge your ideas of “disgusting.”

Exhibited delicacies include Sweden’s fermented herring Surströmming, Peru’s roasted guinea pigs Cuy, Sardinia’s maggot-infested Casu Marzu cheese, China’s pungent stinky tofu, Iceland’s well-aged shark Hákarl, and Thailand’s famously stinky durian fruit.

New York Times

“Fermented Icelandic shark, cheese with larvae, and sauerkraut juice. The exhibition that opened in Malmö on Wednesday is no gourmet fair—on the contrary, it’s disgust that takes center stage. ‘Disgust is subjective. It’s about what you grew up with,’ says the organizer, Andreas Ahrens.”

“Even the foods that appear at the museum in their real forms posed unusual difficulties. To make cuy, a Peruvian dish, West had to watch several YouTube videos on how to skin and boil a guinea pig. ‘I sent my wife and children away the day I did it,’ he recalled. ‘It just felt wrong, bordering on criminal.’ For a South Korean wine that demanded the ‘fresh turds’ of children, Ahrens found himself scooping up his eight‑year‑old daughter’s excrement and fermenting it with rice wine. The final product is on display at the museum, in a gallon jug, though Ahrens has not mustered the will to try it.”

Atlas

“In this episode of the Atlas Obscura podcast, we visit a food museum in Sweden that challenges what exactly makes something delicious … or disgusting.”

The economist

“The idea that anything labeled ‘food’ can be described as ‘disgusting’ is a minefield, running up against cultural tastes and personal preferences, not to mention the shrinking ability of some countries to feed all their people. But clearly, if every human had a cornucopia of the world’s edibles laid out on a table stretching from one end of the earth to the next, not everyone would dig enthusiastically into, say, a lamprey pie, a sliver of maggot‑infested pecorino or a chunk of rotten shark meat.”

Reviews

Ian B

"One of the most unique museums in the world. An interesting collection of weird and wonderful foods... And some plain disgusting one. A truly great way to spend a couple of hours. And at the end you can try some of the less disgusting foods like bugs, strange cheeses and fermented Iceland shark (not as bad as it sounds)... Plus some of the hottest chilli on the planet. Excellent experience.!"

"One of the coolest museums I have visited so far. Not only it's insightful but there are challenges to take. The history of disgusting food is very well put together you can see and smell. The best part is the selection of food choices to try. Some of these are very rare or impossible to get from regular supermarkets. For the extra challenge, you can try some of the most spicy hot sauces. Staff was very friendly and nice, best highlight from the experience!"

It's a different kind of experience. Educational and intriguing. We also did the tasting at the end, it was not as horrible as it first looked.
